Your child’s nutrition intake is an important part of their oral health. Just like the bones and organs of the body, the mouth depends on a proper diet for strength and health. At Children’s Dentistry of North Dallas, we offer nutritional counseling to help parents determine which foods and eating habits are helpful or detrimental to a child’s oral development.

The relationship between diet and dental caries is clear: sugary and acidic foods can weaken the dental enamel and result in tooth decay. However, factors such as types of carbohydrates, frequency of snacking and time intervals of snacking differ for each child. Nutritional counseling creates cooperative interaction between our dentists and the patients and their families to decide upon an effective course of action.

As a general guideline, we encourage parents to limit the amount of unhealthy foods and drinks that their children consume on a daily basis. Instead of sugary and fatty snacks between meals, opt for tooth-friendly snacks such as:

  • Low-fat cheese
  • Low-fat yogurt
  • Leafy, green vegetables
  • Apples
  • Carrots
  • Celery

If your child likes to snack on citrusy fruits, we recommend that they take sips of water between bites so that the acid from the fruit is not allowed to remain on the teeth for too long.

A healthy diet will extend the longevity of your child’s smile. Call 214-378-8868 today to schedule an appointment with our pediatric dentists, Drs. Holly, Iwase and Shah, for children’s nutritional counseling in Dallas, Texas.
